March 21, 2001Houston Raceway Park has been kind to the Jeg's Mail Order Pro Stock cars through the years. In fact, Jeg Coughlin Jr won his first professional NHRA national event in only his second race behind the wheel of a "factory hotrod" at the track.
Last weekend the team debuted their two identical looking yellow and black Jeg's Mail Order 2001 Chevrolet Cavaliers at the Mac Tools Gatornationals. Jeg qualified in the No. 7 spot and Troy landed in the No. 19 position. The race was eventually rescheduled due to rain. After a sub par weekend the team is ready to get back on track and return to their winning ways.
"We struggled to find consistency through qualifying in Gainesville," explained Troy. "Each car came into the Mac Tools Gatornationals with a total of 15 runs. We each added four more runs to them before the rain set in after qualifying. We are eager to return to Houston Raceway Park and get back to our Championship form in the new Jeg's Chevrolet Cavaliers."
"Houston Raceway Park will always be a special track to us. We have a lot of success at the track," commented Jeg. "The weather can change extremely fast anytime of the year. Keeping a close eye on the weather is instrumental to having success. We did some pre season testing in our Oldsmobiles that should translate well to the new Chevy Cavaliers. We would like nothing better than to have the first all-brother final of the season with our new cars."
Team Jeg's enters the fourth race of the '01 NHRA Winston Drag Racing season in unfamiliar territory. Reigning Pro Stock Champion Jeg Coughlin Jr is currently No.8 with 106 points. There are only 20 points that separate the No. 8 spot from the No. 3 spot. Jeg is 87 points from returning to the top of NHRA’s most competitive professional class. Troy Coughlin is resting in the No. 15 position and ready to strike. A win in Houston or a strong showing would put Troy firmly in the top ten.
"It is extremely important to get some positive momentum going early in the season," stated Jeg. "If you start to develop a string of successes it can carry you through the season and catapult you forward in the points. Our goal is to get back on track and make a big move up in the NHRA Championship points. Over the next eleven weeks we will have eight races."
