Company description: Ceradyne Inc. develops, manufactures and markets advanced technical ceramic products and components for defense, consumer, industrial, satellite communications and automotive applications. Because of their lightweight, temperature resistance, hardness and electrical insulation qualities, advanced technical ceramics offer considerable advantages over less durable materials, such as metals or plastics. Founded in 1967, the company has grown by diversifying its product lines to capture evolving opportunities outside its traditional emphasis on defense and aerospace, and through increased awareness of the benefit of ceramics in high-tech industries.
Primary products include lightweight armor vests for military personnel; armor for military helicopter seats and panels; armor for military land- and sea-going vehicles, such as tanks and armored personnel carriers; missile nose cones; aesthetic, translucent ceramics (Clarity(TM)) for orthodontic brackets (braces); high-wear components for cutting or abrasive machines; tooling and components for metalworking and glass manufacturing; components for semiconductor manufacturing equipment; microwave tube components for microwave, radar and satellite communications; and high-wear components for diesel engines. The company is actively engaged in a joint effort with Ford Motor Co. to develop ceramic components for internal combustion automobile engines.
Ceradyne's products are marketed and sold by company and local manufacturers' representatives primarily to contractors and original equipment manufacturers, and to a lesser extent, directly to end users. Ceradyne's orthodontic brackets are marketed and sold exclusively by Unitek, a division of 3M Corp., under the Clarity(TM) brand name. The company holds patents and registered trademarks to protect its proprietary advanced ceramics technologies and brand names.
