Volkswagen Installs Psion Teklogix Handheld and TekRF Interface Software Into Its German Warehousing Facilities
VANCOUVER, British Columbia--March 13, 2001--Psion Teklogix today announced that it has completed installation of a new wireless logistics system for automotive giant Volkswagen AG.
The system, based on Psion Teklogix radio frequency (RF) data terminals and its TekRF(TM) interface software, extends the SAP(R) Logistics Execution System(TM) (SAP LES(TM)) solution in use at Volkswagen AG across its German warehousing. This is, to date, the largest RF deal for Psion Teklogix in Europe.
The architecture, comprising more than 750 Psion Teklogix vehicle and handheld terminals and TekRF software, has enabled Volkswagen to dramatically enhance accuracy and overall productivity across all inventory, logistics and transportation operations.
The new system gives VW users real-time online connectivity with the centralized SAP R/3(R) business solution across several large industrial sites. Now all deliveries can be scanned and tracked in real time at every point from when they arrive at the warehouse until the point of shipping. This has both heightened accuracy on tracking all deliveries and allowed urgent deliveries to be given priority almost immediately after request.
Volkswagen required a system that would allow users across all internal and external logistics centers, including those at VW Europe's largest dispatch center in Kassel, to send and receive data in real time with the SAP R/3 solution in Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters.
Psion Teklogix was able to provide rugged handheld and truck- mounted terminals with integrated scanners. In addition, Psion Teklogix's TekRF middleware allows communication with the central SAP R/3 solution, extending its functionality to the wireless mobile work force.
The majority of the Teklogix 7030 terminals will be based in Volkswagen's main dispatch center in Kassel, where they will be used to scan and track the 150,000 daily transactions covering more than 900 tons of individual parts from more than 240,000 different product lines.
