Delphi Provides Business Opportunities to Minority
Suppliers
$100 Million in Contracts Awarded Since 1996
DAYTON, Ohio, March 13 For the sixth consecutive year,
Delphi Automotive Systems is hosting the Automotive Matchmaker
Conference at the Dayton Convention Center, March 13 and 14. This year's
theme for the minority supplier development conference is: "Opening Doors for
Diversity in Business Relationships."
The conference is designed to bring purchasing agents from major
automotive manufacturers and suppliers together with minority business
entrepreneurs. The goal is to increase minority business within the North
American automotive industry. So far the conference has brought more than
$100 million in new contracts to minority suppliers.
"Delphi believes in partnering with minority business entrepreneurs to
bring high-tech, innovative products to the market," said Charlene Nelson,
senior buyer for Delphi Global Purchasing and co-chair of the event. "The
success of last year's conference exemplifies the importance of bringing a
captive audience of buyers to a forum where minority suppliers can showcase
their capabilities and technologies."
Since its inception in 1996, the conference has grown to include more than
200 of the nation's top minority suppliers. Automotive companies including
General Motors and DaimlerChrysler and Tier 1 suppliers such as Delphi, Denso,
TRW Automotive, Dana and 3M Automotive will have representatives at the
conference.
"Not only does the conference help buyers find solutions to complex needs,
but it also opens up communication, leading to increased networking that may
create future business," Nelson said.
George Herrara, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce, will kick off this year's event as the opening breakfast
speaker. A minority business development expert, Herrara communicates the
interests of over 1.4 million Hispanic-owned businesses across the country to
both the private and public sectors.
In addition to meeting new business prospects, suppliers will hear from
technology experts on what innovations the automotive industry needs and
resources available to meet those needs. Seminar topics for the minority
business enterprises (MBEs) include: Lean/Value Stream Mapping; Growth via the
Internet; incorporating New Technology; and a financial workshop.
"Quality, competitiveness, the ability to bring products to the market
fast, and technological leadership are key to our goal of being recognized by
our customers as their best supplier," said George Mansfield, purchasing
director, Delphi Energy & Chassis Systems, and a keynote speaker. "The more
we can help our suppliers understand and meet our technology needs, the
stronger we will be, the stronger they will be and the stronger our customers
will be."
In addition to the Matchmaker conference, Delphi continues its ongoing
efforts to ensure the success of minority supplier development. Diversity of
Delphi's supply base continues to be a strategic and focused initiative as
Delphi's minority supplier development program encompasses joint venture
activity, strategic alliances, supplier development and a mentoring process.
Recently, Delphi entered into an academic partnership with several
historically black colleges and universities as a method to develop the
minority supplier base in new technology areas.
In 2000, Delphi achieved $529 million in minority business enterprise
procurements, representing a 17 percent increase over 1999. The 2000 minority
supplier procurements represent 5.2 percent of Delphi's total outside
purchases. Also, Delphi has established aggressive strategies to reach 10
percent minority procurement by 2005.
