FRIDAY NIGHT WYNN'S 100 ASA RACE AT IRWINDALE RAINED-OUT tires.com 300 STILL ON SCHEDULE FOR SATURDAY NIGHT MARCH 10
Irwindale, Calif. - - (March 9, 2001) The American Speed Association (ASA) Wynn's 100 qualifying race was rained out tonight and will not be rescheduled. The weekend's feature race the "tires.com 300 presented by BFGoodrich" will go on as scheduled on Saturday, March 10 at its announced 6pm starting time with the racing grid set by single-car qualifying earlier on Friday afternoon.
Veteran short tracker Butch Miller of Coopersville, Michigan set the pace in the first-ever ASA qualifying round west of the Rockies with a 17.844 tour of the ½-mile oval for a 100.874 average speed in his Pontiac. Putting up the second-fastest time (17.932 100.379) to land him on the front row with Miller for the Saturday 300-lapper was Chevy driver Kevin Cywinski of Wausau, Wisconsin. Rookie contender Johnny Sauter of Necedah, Wisconsin, will start third, St. Augustine race winner Joey Clanton of Stockbridge, Georgia will start fourth, and 2000 ASA Champion Gary St. Amant, from Columbus, Ohio will start fifth in a super-strong 38-car field that all qualified within a second and a quarter.
Fans who bought GA tickets for the rained-out Friday night race will be given their choice of turning in their Friday ticket and paying only $5.00 for admission to the Saturday night 300-lap race (a $20.00 ticket price) or using their Friday night ticket stub for free admission to any regularly-scheduled racing event (with the exception of opening night March 17, 2001) at Irwindale Speedway during the 2001 season.
