Exide Technologies to Help Earthquake Victims in India; Exide Employees in India Contribute Two Days Wages

    PRINCETON, N.J., March 8 With the effects of the recent
major earthquake in India still causing pain for the country's populace, Exide
Technologies has donated $30,000 worth of tents to the affected
region.
    "The need for tents as temporary shelter for hundreds of thousands
survivors continues to be critical, so we're trying to help as best we can,"
said Robert A. Lutz, Exide Technologies Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
    The quake hit the western state of Gujarat, measuring between 7.6 and 7.9
on the Richter scale.  The final death toll has been reported at approximately
50,000.
    "We have a plant located near Gandhinagar, which is the capital of
Gujarat," added Lutz. "The epicenter of the quake was very close by.
Thankfully, though, none of our employees were seriously injured or killed."
    In addition to the company's $30,000 donation for tents, Exide
Technologies employees in India have each voluntarily contributed two days'
worth of salary, approximately Rs. 1,24,982 to the relief fund.
    "I commend our employees in India for their charitable efforts," said
Lutz. "They certainly have extraordinarily big hearts."
