Search for America's Kindest Kid Ends April
1!! $10,000 College Scholarship Goes to the Winner!
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., March 7 American Humane Association
(AHA) said today that entries to its annual search for America's kindest kid
are due April 1. Each year, as part of celebrations surrounding "Be Kind To
Animals Week," AHA names one child in America who has shown extraordinary
kindness and compassion towards animals. The winner of this year's contest,
who will receive a $10,000 college scholarship and a great prize package, will
be announced during "Be Kind To Animals Week," May 6-12.
"Each year, we receive hundreds of nominations to help us find the kindest
kid in America," said Jack Sparks, Associate Vice-President, Communications.
"It's amazing to hear the stories of how children are reaching out in their
communities to help animals. Whether it's volunteering at a local shelter to
help animals find homes, raising money to support wildlife protection, or any
act that goes the extra mile for animals, we want to hear about America's kind
kids."
This year, AHA is accepting nominations for its contest on the internet at
http://www.americanhumane.org. Parents, teachers, and other people are urged to
nominate children from their community for this prestigious prize. If you
know of a kind kid, AHA wants to hear about it!
In its 86th year, "Be Kind To Animals Week" is the oldest national week
designed to celebrate the unique bond that exists between people and animals
and is celebrated by animal shelters and humane societies throughout America.
The Be Kind To Animals Kid Contest is a highlight of the week each year and in
2001, the winner will receive a $10,000 college scholarship. The American
Humane Association is holding "Be Kind To Animals Week" this year thanks to a
generous sponsorship from SIERRA, The Safer Antifreeze. SIERRA is the
originator and market leader in the propylene glycol (PG) based antifreeze
category. PG-based antifreeze provides an added margin of safety for pets,
children and wildlife, compared to conventional ethyl glycol (EG) based
antifreeze, if accidentally ingested. Animals can accidentally drink
antifreeze from leaking radiators, boil-overs, and improperly stored
containers of used antifreeze.
Also involved in this year's Kid Contest is Random House Children's Books.
Random House Children's Books have recently released a new series of books
called "Woof!", that delightfully introduces kids to the joys and
responsibilities of owning a dog. Random House Children's Books has
graciously agreed to supply each nominated kind kid with their very own copy
of one of the first books in the series -- "A Puppy of My Own" or "Cute As a
Button." For more information on the "Woof!" series, please visit

Founded in 1877, American Humane Association is the nation's only national
non-profit dedicated to protecting children and animals from cruelty, abuse
and neglect. With headquarters in Colorado, AHA also works in Washington, DC,
as a voice for children and animals before government, and in Los Angeles to
protect animals used in film and television.
