City of Detroit Announces Parking and Transportation During SAE 2001 World Congress March 5-8

    DETROIT, March 5 The City of Detroit will welcome 50,000
engineers and suppliers at the annual SAE World Congress at Cobo Conference
Center March 5-8.  Attendees and commuters are advised to allow ample travel
time to reach their destination as heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic is
expected in the downtown area.  Adequate parking is available on a first come,
first serve basis.  As a convenience, the City of Detroit recommends
individuals make use of the following Municipal Parking Department Structures:

    Cobo Complex                    6 a.m. - midnight
    200 Civic Center Drive
    475 Washington Boulevard

    Joe Louis Arena Garage          5:30 a.m. - 11 p.m.
    900 West Jefferson

    Millennium Garage               6 a.m. - 11 p.m.
    423 W. Congress

    All on-street parking meters will be strictly enforced.  Illegally parked
vehicles will be ticketed and towed.
    Individuals are also encouraged to make use of parking facilities located
along the Detroit People Mover route.  People Mover hours of operation are
Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday 7 a.m. to midnight;
Saturday, 9 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday, noon to 8 p.m.
    The People Mover fare is 50 cents per ride.  Any combination of U.S.
nickels, dimes and quarters or one DPM token may be used for entry.
Tokens are available in all DPM stations.  Persons certified as handicapped,
Medicare cardholders and the elderly are eligible for discounted (50%) passes
and tokens.  Children five and under ride free.  Trains depart the stations
approximately every 3 - 5 minutes.  The DPM is 100 percent accessible to
elderly and disabled persons.
