ASM International Spins off Heat Treating Progress
MATERIALS PARK, Ohio--Feb. 27, 2001--Heat Treating Progress (HTP) debuts as a trade publication dedicated to covering heat treating -- a critical, yet frequently misunderstood, link in the manufacturing process that improves the properties, performance and durability of metals.Published by ASM International, the 40,000-member materials society, HTP is of interest to heat treating business owners and managers, metallurgists, materials engineers, shop floor managers, researchers and others who have an interest in this thermal process. The publication formerly was a supplement to Advanced Materials & Processes, the official magazine of ASM International.
"Heat treating in the United States is a $20 billion industry," HTP's publisher Timothy R. McNichols said. "Globally, heat treating represents approximately $75 billion or more in value added to manufacturing."
Leading the magazine in its mission to address "The Business and Technology of Heat Treating" is editor-in-chief Robert H. Wehrenberg II, an engineer and journalist with more than 30 years' experience in metals and materials.
"Rob brings to HTP a very strong metals/materials background, plus extensive writing and publishing experience," McNichols said. "We look forward to Rob's shaping the future editorial direction of HTP and his contributions to the editorial/magazine team as a whole."
Each edition of HTP has an issue focus, process focus and featured editorial subject of interest to a wide range of industries. Particular emphasis is on automotive, aerospace, manufactured metal parts and heavy equipment.
Regular contributors to HTP include columnists G.W. Montgomery, an industry observer known for his commentary on heat treating news and events, and Jim Henning, a heat treating and forging expert providing practical advice for solving technical problems.
Other departments are "Critical Point Editorial"; "Capitol Comments," focusing on commercial heat treaters; "International Alert" (worldwide research and development); the Web; datasheets; "Reference Library" featuring free technical literature; and "Thermal History" highlighting heat treating's heritage.
The November HTP will spotlight the 21st ASM Heat Treating Society Conference and Exposition, Nov. 5-8, 2001 in Indianapolis. A "Thermal Source Book and Buyers' Guide," will cap the year in December.
HTP is published seven times a year. Subscriptions are free to qualified individuals at www.asminternational.org/htpsub.
