CERRITOS, Calif., Feb. 27 IMPCO Technologies, Inc.
a global leader in alternative fuel system technology, today
announced the company has received a $4 million order from Ashok Leyland,
India's leading city bus manufacturer for natural gas fuel systems to be
delivered this calendar year for India's growing country-wide natural gas city
bus program.
India has over 500 natural gas powered buses in daily operation in India's
capital Delhi, only a small portion of the over 9 million buses on the road in
India today -- all of which are prime targets for conversion to natural gas
with IMPCO systems. The end of 2001 projects India to have the world's
largest fleet of dedicated natural gas buses designed for city transit use.
The main drivers are continued reduction of major city air pollution and the
expansion of the country's energy self-reliance policy -- both by government
decree. The economics are also favorable with natural gas 50% the cost of
diesel and gasoline fuels.
Mr. Robert Stemmler, CEO and Chairmen of the Board of IMPCO Technologies,
said, "India's natural gas city bus program has a tremendous future. Due to
government regulations all major cities with air pollution problems are
mandated to change to natural gas powered propulsion systems in their transit
vehicles. By the summer of 2001, the world's largest natural gas powered bus
fleet will be in India. In the coming two years over 15,000 buses are planned
for India's major cities, all using natural gas. Fuel and exhaust catalyst
systems are being supplied by IMPCO. Further projects are on the way for new
engine families and bus concepts for the future in close co-operation with
IMPCO and Ashok Leyland's product development department in Ennore, India.
"Ashok Leyland is one of India's leading manufacturers of commercial
vehicles. The company also manufactures special vehicles and engines for
industrial, power generators and marine requirements. For over five decades,
the company has been a major presence in India's commercial vehicle industry,"
Mr. Stemmler added.
