Romancing the Rails: WESTWAYS Highlights Lux Trains; Magazine Also Features How Transportation Decisions are Made

    LOS ANGELES, Calif.--Feb. 27, 2001--WESTWAYS magazine's March/April issue features three luxury trains: South Africa's Blue Train, the American Orient Express, and the infamous Orient-Express, along with "Eight Great" railroad museums to visit.
    The magazine also features a primer about how transportation projects in California are approved and completed.
    The March/April issue continues the rail theme with "A Sense of Place," an essay about Los Angeles' Union Station by Southland poet Amy Gerstler. She has written several poetry books, including "Bitter Angel," a National Book Critics Circle Award winner.
    "City Views," continues with St. Louis. WESTWAYS highlights the Gateway City's history, world class museums, and Italian restaurants and blues joints.
    Auto Club transportation policy specialist Steve Finnegan and Pete Hathaway, chief deputy director for the California Transportation Commission, explain in "Calling the Shots," how transportation tax dollars are spent and also offer a who's who in the transportation decision-making process.
    The magazine's automotive section highlights factory hot rods including a BMW, an Acura and a Ford that are WESTWAYS' staff favorites. The section contains an owner's survey for those who own or have owned a Chevrolet Blazer, GMC Jimmy, Ford Explorer, Mercury Mountaineer, or Jeep Grand Cherokee. WESTWAYS asks readers to describe the SUVs' best and worst features. WESTWAYS' also features the Auto Club's new 2000 Freightliner that provides assistance to members with mobility limitations.
    Growing numbers of travelers are opting to take their dogs and cats with them on the road. Seasoned WESTWAYS travel columnists Elizabeth Harryman and Paul Lasley help readers bone up on how to travel with their pets, and find the hotels that are welcoming animals with a variety of special services.
    Off-Ramp features the Downey train depot in 1952 and in 2001. The terminal will be transformed into the Downey Transportation Center later this year with a dispatch center for transit service for the elderly and persons with disabilities.
    The March/April WESTWAYS offers restaurants with spicy fare where WESTWAYS readers can turn up the food flame. The issue also offers how-to consumer tips, best ways to store wine and places to visit after dark. WESTWAYS' "hot" places for spicy foods are:
