Toyota and EMC Unite to Place Information At the Center of Formula 1 Racing
HOPKINTON, Mass. & COLOGNE, Germany--Feb. 26, 2001--Strategic Relationship Unveiled as Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) Names EMC Corporation as Its Official Information Infrastructure Provider
Toyota Motorsport GmbH's (TMG) vision of building an entire Formula 1 organization around the most progressive information infrastructure in Formula 1 history came to fruition today as the company made public its strategic relationship with EMC, the world leader in information storage. EMC has been named TMG's exclusive "Official Information Infrastructure Provider," and the two companies have joined forces to revolutionize the way a Formula 1 organization utilizes information to gain competitive advantage over other teams.
TMG President Ove Andersson said, "Information is the engine for any Formula 1 team. It enables friction-free decision-making and support far beyond the track. By teaming with EMC, Toyota Motorsport has deployed an EMC Proven information infrastructure of a scope and magnitude not seen before in Formula 1. EMC, with its information storage and management solutions, has brought our information to life by placing it at the center of our organization."
EMC and TMG have entered a three-year sponsorship agreement. Terms include placement of the EMC logo on Toyota's Formula 1 car and admission to TMG test sessions and Grand Prix races. EMC also will bring customers to visit the TMG production and research facility and participate in "TMG Driving School," where they will have the opportunity to drive Toyota road cars in a series of controlled driving technique and skid-control activities.
EMC Executive Chairman Mike Ruettgers said, "EMC's decision to sponsor TMG was based both on the strength of Toyota's reputation and the technology-driven nature of Formula 1 competition. Like EMC, Toyota has earned a worldwide reputation for innovation, product reliability and customer satisfaction. As EMC helped TMG realize its vision of placing information at the center of its efforts, we immediately recognized TMG's commitment to building the most technologically advanced Formula 1 team on the circuit."
"We have the full financial and technical backing of our parent company, Toyota Motor Corporation," commented Ove. "With such resources at its fingertips, TMG has had the uncommon luxury of being able to pick and choose sponsors, like EMC, that can offer our Formula 1 team an edge."
At TMG's production and research facility in Cologne, Germany, EMC and TMG engineers already have converged to develop a highly specialized EMC Proven information infrastructure. The role of information in TMG's continued success will accelerate when TMG unveils its car on March 23 and launches an intensive testing regimen throughout the 2001 season. Data collected during testing is key to TMG's success in the highly competitive Formula 1 circuit, and TMG plans to have two cars, driven by Formula 1 standout Mika Salo and American Le Mans Series Champion Allan McNish, simultaneously testing throughout 2001. TMG and EMC will begin racing in 2002 with nearly a year's worth of extensive testing and development behind them.
"Testing is crucial to our team's success," said Salo. "Each test car will be equipped with over a hundred sensors with the mission of gathering information on every aspect of both the car and driver's performance. This will make it impossible for a driver like myself to hide. If I do something correct, everyone will see it and learn from it. If I do something wrong, it can be quickly identified and corrected."
The 2001 Formula 1 season begins on March 1st at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
