FMDRS Saturday Results from Gainesville

PAYNE, HENTGES ON TOP AT GAINESVILLE RACEWAY

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - NHRA Southeast Division Federal-Mogul Funny Car Champion Jay Payne grabbed the top spot in qualifying for this weekend's Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series at Gainesville. Payne posted a run of 5.867 seconds at 242.13 mph in his Valvoline Camaro. Payne is followed by Apopka, Fla., resident Mark Billington at 6.065 seconds, 228.42 mph. Defending National Champion Frank Manzo made the trip down from the Northeast Division and is currently in the number six spot with a 7.025 second run. Manzo got in and out of the (race track) grove in the first 300 feet but stayed on the gas putting him in the show after one round of qualifying. In the Federal-Mogul Dragster category, it was Mark Hentges with the early lead with a run of 5.532 seconds at 256.04 mph. Michael Gunderson, defending event champion, is in the number two sport with a mark of 5.621, 264.39. Mike Saye is the Sealed Power Low Qualifier in Comp. Eliminator, covering the quartermile in 8.852 seconds, 0.738 seconds under his index. Larry Pritchett, David Rampy and Rob Slavinski follow in the two through four spots respectivly. Bob Dennis of Shorter, Ala., held on to the number one spot in not one but two classes with his '82 Cutlass in Stock and his '97 Firehawk in Super Stock. Gates open tomorrow at 8 a.m., eliminations begin at 9 a.m. with round one of Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Cars set for 1 p.m.
