Eaton Corporation Announces Charitable Contributions of $5.2 Million in 2000; Cleveland Organizations and Institutions Benefit From Donation of $1.6 Million
Business EditorsCLEVELAND--Feb. 22, 2001--Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation reported today that it granted more than $5.2 million in philanthropic contributions in 2000, primarily in the United States and North America.
The Eaton Charitable Fund distributes funds to non-profit organizations and educational institutions for support of programs that address the company's philanthropic priorities advocating employee involvement and investment, promoting self-sufficiency, sustaining arts and cultural institutions, and enhancing education.
"We are proud to reaffirm our commitment to good corporate citizenship worldwide," explains Alexander M. Cutler, Eaton's chairman and chief executive officer. "We place a high value on social responsibility and strive to make a difference in the communities where Eaton operates."
Locally, Eaton contributed a total of $1.6 million to various educational institutions, arts and cultural organizations, and health and human services organizations, including:

-- | Newton D. Baker Elementary School, $14,000, Eaton's partner school, for student counseling sessions and proficiency workbooks |
-- | Contributions to arts and cultural institutions in the Cleveland area totaling more than $320,000. Recipients included the Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Play House, Playhouse Square Foundation, Cleveland Museum of Art, Great Lakes Theater Festival, Great Lakes Science Center and the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art |

-- | Cuyahoga County Early Childhood Initiative, $25,000, in support of its programs to help children in their formative years reach school ready to learn |
Eaton also contributed generously on a national and North American basis. Other beneficiaries included:
-- United Way, to whom Eaton donated $1.7 million in matching
contributions based on employees' contributions of more than
$3.3 million nationally in 78 communities where Eaton
operations are located.
-- Habitat for Humanity, donation of load centers and circuit
breakers. Over a six-year period, the company has contributed
products used in more than 450 homes in the United States and
Canada.
-- Grants to educational institutions, to develop the technical
skills and leadership talent of the next generation of
employees. Dartmouth, Iowa State University, Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, North Carolina A & T, Northwestern,
Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University,
University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, and the
University of North Carolina are among those funded.
-- INROADS, to whom Eaton contributed more than $60,000, for the
Eaton Engineering Minority Scholars Program.
-- Gift Matching Awards, $566,646, to 658 organizations, in
matching contributions for employee and retiree donations on a
one-to-one basis.
Beyond the borders of the United States and Canada, Eaton has contributed $203,500 to various organizations including elementary schools, hospitals, and orphanages in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Brazil.
