Visteon's Long Life Filtration System - Designed to Go the
Distance
DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 22 In an effort to develop
maintenance-free vehicle solutions, Visteon Corporation is
introducing another Visteon first -- a factory-installed Long Life Filtration
System designed to virtually eliminate filter maintenance over the lifespan a
vehicle.
"This is good news for our customers and consumers. This technology saves
space in the engine compartment for customers and saves consumers time and
money in meeting routine maintenance requirements," said Michael Johnston,
Visteon's President and Chief Operating Officer.
Visteon's Long Life Filtration System is a filter element contained within
an Air Induction System that is designed to last more than 150,000 miles under
normal use. It consists of a reticulated foam filter that traps an
unprecedented amount of dust, salt, moisture and other corrosives.
Additionally, the foam is 97 percent porous, so it traps dust and other
contaminants within the depths of the foam layers, utilizing the whole volume
and not just the surface.
Vehicle manufacturers and consumers benefit from this new system because
it does not need frequent attention and it is not limited to the traditional
under the hood placement. Visteon's Air Induction System can be placed in
another section of the vehicle, freeing up space in the engine compartment.
This latitude in placement allows the vehicle team to focus their attention on
reducing noise, vibration and harshness instead of packaging the air filter
box and air induction systems within an already crowded engine compartment.
In light of environmental concerns, Visteon's unique filtration system is
manufactured from 25 percent post-consumer recycled materials. With the
reduction of filter replacements over the lifespan of a vehicle, the amount of
solid waste materials entering landfills would be reduced. In addition, the
filter layer design can be equipped with special treated layers to further
reduce evaporative emissions.
The results of a series of tests, in both the laboratory and in stressful
driving conditions, indicated Visteon's Long Life Filtration System should
provide maximum value to customers under normal driving conditions for
passenger cars and light trucks, and can be configured to meet and exceed
150,000 miles under these conditions.
This all-new Visteon technology is expected to be in production vehicles
as early as 2003.
