Indy Car Pioneer and Automotive Expert Lyn St. James Signs New Contract With Continental Teves for 'Drive Safer America!' 2001 Campaign

St. James Offers Safe Driving Tips

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 19 Building on the success of
its national "Drive Safer America!" campaign, automotive supplier Continental
Teves has renewed its contract for 2001 with Indy Car racing pioneer and
automotive authority Lyn St. James, it was announced today.
St. James has partnered with Continental Teves for the fifth straight year
to promote driving safety and the proper use of new safety technologies.
Terms of the one-year contract renewal were not disclosed.
"Drive Safer America!," is a national education campaign designed to help
drivers better understand proper techniques for driving safely. World
renowned as one of the first women to race in the Indianapolis 500, Ms. St.
James believes that public education is vital to helping consumers gain the
full benefit of the safety tools available to them in today's vehicles.
"As a professional race car driver and a concerned parent, I strongly
support safe driving education both on and off the track," said Ms. St. James.
"I know that both seasoned drivers and beginners will benefit from learning
safer driving techniques and habits, particularly families with small
children. It's important that drivers understand how to use new safety
systems such as anti-lock brakes and practice year round safe driving
techniques."
Ms. St. James, in partnership with Continental Teves, has developed a
series of safe driving techniques and practices that all drivers can apply
year round. Ms. St. James has compiled an extensive list of safety
suggestions that will be featured in a free "Drive Safer America!" brochure
and also available on a newly updated web site, located at
http://www.drivesaferamerica.org .
According to Ms. St. James, winter is the most difficult driving season
because of the many hazards facing drivers, such as ice, snow, lower
temperatures and fewer daytime hours for travel. She notes that in any given
year, driver error contributes to nearly 42,000 deaths in the United States
due in large part to what she terms, "a lack of understanding of basic driving
techniques and practices."
"Our message is simple, as an industry leader in developing automotive
safety technology and expertise, Continental Teves is taking a leadership role
in safe driving," said William Kozyra, president of Continental Teves N.A.
"We are innovators in safety devices and are delighted to draw upon the
experience of one of the world's leading drivers.
"The world's auto makers have invested in superior technology and applied
their expertise to make drivers and families safer," said Kozyra. "Newer cars
and sport utility vehicles are much safer with advanced systems such as the
Electronic Stability Program anti-lock brakes and traction control."
Continental Teves, headquartered in Frankfurt/Main Germany, is a unit of
Continental AG, Hanover, Germany. The company is a leading supplier of safety
and comfort systems that contribute to driver safety and peace of mind.
