Moths Force New Zealand Government to Change
Car Import Laws: just-auto.com Reports
LONDON, Feb. 16 http://www.just-auto.com -- New import
rules, due to be introduced in March, will mean that used cars imported into
New Zealand will be searched to ensure that moth eggs are not lurking in the
car.
The report at http://just-auto.com/news_detail.asp?art=24121 says that the
regulations were introduced by the New Zealand government after checks on
vehicles from Japan revealed that many were carrying gypsy moth eggs, whose
hungry larvae are notorious for stripping vegetation.
The new guidelines insist that a phytosanitary certificate is issued which
specifically states that gypsy moth eggs are not present, and that the
inspections are carried out no earlier than 12 days before a car is shipped.
If a pre-shipment inspection has not been carried out, then New Zealand
officials must check cars within 12 hours of arrival.
