Why is Mitsubishi Recalling 1.5 Million Vehicles? Asks just-auto.com

    LONDON, Feb. 15 http://www.just-auto.com --
Japan's Mitsubishi Motors is recalling 1.5 million Galant sedans and five-door
hatchbacks plus Chrysler Group Eclipse derivative models around the world due
to water penetrating lateral lower steering arm ball joints, possibly causing
corrosion and accelerating wear.
The report at http://just-auto.com/news_detail.asp?art=24028 says the
company is also recalling a number of other Japanese market-specification
Pajero and Minica models for checks on automatic transmission oil coolers,
airbag systems and driveshafts.
This recall has been widened beyond Japan due to the number of unofficial
exports to right-hand drive markets.
Although no cases of Galant steering wear have been found in European
countries, two cases have come to light in Japan and in the US, where there is
no annual MOT -- type safety test, there have been 23 reported cases.
