While the first (animatronic prototype) was built to attract audiences
during a 200-city national automotive safety campaign conducted by the Child
Safety Network and the U.S. Department of Transportation, so many people asked
if the could buy a real Mach 5(TM) that Speed Racer Autoworks paid
$2.25 million for the exclusive world-wide rights to fabricate, tour and sell
vehicles based on the Cartoon Series Speed Racer(C). The first 100 cars
called "The Mach 5 Signature Series(R)" are signed and numbered by the voice
of Speed Racer(C) (Peter Fernandez) and the voice of Trixie(TM) (Corinne Orr).
The cars will sell for $72,500 plus license fees. A refundable $35,000 deposit
is required within 15 days of the order.
Automotive publishing giant, Robert Petersen for the Petersen Automotive
Museum, purchased the first animatronic prototype at the Kruse International
Auto Auction over Labor Day 2000. All $180,000 of the amount paid went to
benefit the Child Safety Network (CSN). To assist in CSN's automotive safety
efforts, Speed Racer Autoworks will donate 20% of the net profits from the
sale of every Mach 5 Signature Series vehicle to CSN.
"Speed Racer, created in 1967, has an estimated worldwide fan base of over
50 million people. By name recognition alone, the Mach 5(TM) is the most
famous racecar in the world. More people can tell you the name of Speed
Racer's car than any other racecar in the world." Said Jim Rocknowski of Speed
Racer Enterprises (the company that licenses Speed Racer properties).
According to Rocknowski, the building of the real Mach 5(TM) was the
brainchild of Ward Leber, CEO of the Child Safety Network Trust and now
President of Speed Racer Autoworks, LLC. "Speed Racer Enterprises has
entertained hundreds of proposals to build a real Mach 5(TM) over the years.
Leber's proposal was the only one that really made sense. Using a world
famous icon to promote child safety and automotive safety is a great plan,"
said Rocknowski.
Leber said, "The time-honored interest in the Mach 5(TM) has dramatically
assisted the Child Safety Network in its efforts to distribute more than
10 million Child Safety Info Packs(C) during its 200 city National Child
Safety Tour. He added that Warner Brothers is in production on the
live-action feature film and that MTV is looking at bringing back "Classic"
'Speed Racer,' and all new adventures of 'Speed Racer' never before seen in
the U.S."
"Driving the Mach 5 is the childhood dream of million of Speed's Fans.
Being a part of fulfilling such a fun and exiting dream is going to be a real
kick," Said Fernandez.
A digital photo gallery and specifications of the Mach 5(TM) can be found
at http://www.mymach5.com. CSN is a charitable trust founded in 1989. It is
dedicated to promoting safety and protection of children throughout the United
States. Its main focus is to reduce the likelihood of children becoming
abused, abducted or injured. More than 170 U.S. representatives including the
office of the President have written letters of endorsement for CSN's decade
of community service.
