GM's Schilke to Receive SAE Medal of Honor

    WARRENDALE, Pa., Feb. 9 Neil A. Schilke, General Director
Engineering, Corporate Staffs, General Motors Corporation and Society of
Automotive Engineers 2001 President-Elect, has been named as the 2001
recipient of the SAE Medal of Honor.
    Schilke received SAE's highest honor for " ... formalizing and
institutionalizing the SAE strategic planning process,  ...  the creation of
the Mobility Technology Planning Forums, initiating the systems engineering
process in SAE ... " and ... "a major contributor in a global sense by helping
to establish the identity and direction for the creation of SAE International
and SAE Foundation Canada."
    The SAE Medal of Honor is given to recognize and honor a living SAE member
who has made important and significant contributions to SAE by strengthening
or adding to SAE's ability to further its purpose.
    SAE President Rodica Baranescu will present the award at the SAE Honors
Convocation and Luncheon in the Riverview Ballroom of Cobo Center on Tuesday,
March 6 during SAE 2001 World Congress, March 5-8.
    An SAE Fellow and member of the SAE Board of Directors, Schilke has been
SAE Treasurer since 1998 and was Assistant Treasurer from 1994-97.  He has
also served as chair of several SAE committees, including Bylaws, Objectives
and Strategic Planning, Public Affairs, and was co-chair of the Mobility
Technology Planning Forums I and II.
    After joining GM in 1960 with the Chevrolet Division, Schilke moved to GM
Research Laboratories in 1964, where he was involved in conventional and
advanced powertrains, vehicle aerodynamics, acoustics and vehicle control
systems.
    In subsequent years, he undertook assignments with increased
responsibility, including, in 1988, the formation of the GM Systems
Engineering Center (SEC) for the Chevrolet-Pontiac-Canada Car Group.  He was
also Manager of GM Project Trilby, a corporate project to establish integrated
vehicle control and systems engineering capabilities for GM.
    Prior to moving to GM of Canada in 1996, Schilke was Director of Energy,
Noise and Vibration and Systems Engineering for GM North American Operations
(NAO).  At GM of Canada, Schilke was General Director of Engineering and
Product Planning, and a member of the GM of Canada Strategy Board.
    A graduate of Cornell University with bachelor's and master's degrees in
mechanical engineering, Schilke is a member of the University Council and
member and past chair of the College of Engineering Advisory Council.
    Schilke and his wife Ro have two children, Kevin and Karen, and two
grandsons, Zachary and Jeremy.
