Delphi Enters Licensing Agreement With MLR, LCC To Strengthen
Wireless Voice, Data Import Into Vehicle
TROY, Mich., Feb. 9 Delphi Automotive Systems
announced today it has signed a cooperative licensing agreement with MLR, LLC,
that will further strengthen Delphi's future telematics offerings.
Under the agreement, Delphi will acquire important wireless and omnimodal
technology rights for Delphi's portfolio of Communiport(R) Mobile MultiMedia
technologies -- particularly telematics, which allow for two-way voice-and-
data exchange between vehicles and service centers.
"Omnimodal" refers to a wireless technology's ability to shift between
modes in transmitting and receiving information. Currently, the term is most
relevant in describing a cellular phone or modem's ability to automatically
shift an incoming call or stream of data from analog to digital.
Delphi's licensing agreement with MLR will help ensure that customers
experience the best service possible in making hands-free phone calls and in
accessing Internet-based data. The omnimodal technology achieves this by
making sure that calls and data are not "dropped" or interrupted during
transmission.
MLR's patented technology covers basic protocols and circuitry for
cellular data transmission and also covers more advanced omnimodal technology
that affords automated access to wireless networks operating on different
transmission protocols.
MLR's patented technologies are designed to maintain wireless data
connections to prevent disconnected or dropped calls as a vehicle travels from
one cell site to the next and to increase the data throughput rates via
improved communications protocols and forward error correction techniques.
Other aspects of MLR's patented technologies involve important connectivity
features that allow interconnection of portable personal computers with
cellular telephones to facilitate call placement and data flow.
An important aspect of the agreement grants to Delphi the ability to offer
MLR technology rights to Delphi suppliers.
MLR, LCC, headquartered in McLean, Va., USA develops and licenses
technology rights involving (1) basic wireless data protocols for maintaining
and improving the rate of data flow, (2) interconnectivity between computers
and wireless transceivers, and (3) advanced omnimodal techniques that allow
automated access to wireless networks operating on different transmission
protocols appropriate for analog cellular systems (e.g. AMPS), digital
cellular systems (e.g. CDMA, TDMA, GSM, and PCS) and specialized wireless data
systems (e.g. CDPD). MLR's patented technology has been broadly licensed to
major modem and modem chipset manufacturers such as 3Com, AT&T, Motorola,
Lucent, Rockwell International, Compaq and many others. In addition, MLR
holds significant rights in technologies allowing omnimodal users to program
preferences for networks that meet special requirements such as least cost,
strength of signal or maximum security. Other important MLR rights relate to
methods which allow wireless networks to share radio frequency to use more
efficiently the available radio spectrum. MLR has further developed advanced
technologies designed to allow wireless identification of individuals with
greatly improved reliability to facilitate electronic commerce using portable
wireless devices having omnimodal capabilities.
