Here are some general rules and guidelines for proper use of a car seat:
1. Read all car seat instructions and the vehicle owner's manual before
installing your car seat.
2. All children under 13 should be properly secured in the rear seat.
Children must never be placed in the front seat of vehicles with a
front passenger air bag or a front passenger side-impact air bag.
3. When installing a child seat in your vehicle place your weight on the
car seat. Lock the seat belt by following the instructions in your
vehicle's owner's manual. Check the installation to allow no more than
1 inch of side to side or forward movement.
4. Infants should ride rear facing and semi-reclined to no more than 45
degrees until age 1 and up to 20 pounds. Never place a rear facing
seat on the front seat of a vehicle equipped with a front passenger
side air bag.
5. Toddlers ride forward facing and upright once they reach age 1 and at
least 20 pounds. Children should stay in the front facing seat with a
harness until they are 40 pounds.
6. When a child reaches 40 to 80 pounds and up to 4 feet 9 inches tall a
child booster seat should be used. Children should use a belt
positioning booster seat from 40 to 80 pounds and up to approximately 4
feet 9 inches tall.
