AutoWeek Editor Dutch Mandel Dubs 'Sport Ute Coupes'
As Auto Industry's Newest Design Trend
WHO: Dutch Mandel, Editor and Associate Publisher of AutoWeek,
America's only weekly auto enthusiast/lifestyle publication.
WHAT: Dutch Mandel is available to comment on breaking auto news
topics at this week's Chicago Auto Show with local, national
and international scope that affect consumers. He brings a
studied and practiced perspective to issues generated by the
industry: its vehicles, advertising, marketing, product
planning, and the trends behind the headlines.
Toyota unveils its new RSC (Rugged Sports Coupe) concept to the
media February 7th at the Chicago Auto Show. AutoWeek Editor
Dutch Mandel points to it as an example of a new genre of
vehicles categorized by AutoWeek as "Sport Ute Coupes" -- a
melding of two wildly disparate vehicles targeted at a single
market. Is it a sports car? Is it a sport/ute? The RSC and
similar examples of the species like Mitsubishi's RPM7000, Ford
EX or Pontiac's REV concept, are, according to Mandel, designed
and styled to appeal to those "spiked-haired, body-pierced,
skateboard-riding Gen-Xers and Gen-Yers." Toyota's RSC "speaks
to the vert-ramp emotion of an aggressive in-line skater," says
Mandel, "or tugs at our viscera the way watching a street luge
exhibit or a whitewater kayak competition does." Although RSC
is only a design study, according to AutoWeek it may be the
next shape of cars to come.
WHERE: Chicago Auto Show, McCormick Place
WHY: AutoWeek identifies and dissects the latest automotive trends
in its February 12th cover story on the Toyota RSC.
