New @Road API Program to Enhance Development of Mobile Resource Management Solutions
FREMONT, Calif.--Feb. 7, 2001--@Road(SM) , a leading provider of location-enhanced wireless Internet solutions for mobile resource management (MRM), Wednesday announced the establishment of a formal Application Programming Interface (API) program and the release of software interfaces to support it.The company will encourage third-party software developers and service providers to integrate the @Road location, information and communication capabilities into their current and future offerings.
To further the development of enhanced mobile resource management solutions, @Road plans to expand the licensing of its patented LocationSmart(TM) technology and offer an open-architecture platform to developers and service providers interested in working with @Road as a Value-Added Solution Partner. @Road LocationSmart technology combines wireless, positioning and XML technologies with the Internet to support a wide range of business and management solutions for fleet owners and mobile professionals.
"The expanding mobile workforce has created a growing demand for business solutions that can be implemented as easily outside the office as in," said Krish Panu, @Road president and CEO. "Our technology and highly scalable network can support a wealth of existing services and emerging ideas, and the APIs allow seamless interaction between our system and another. This gives us the opportunity to offer complete solutions in existing market segments, open new market segments and leverage new distribution channels."
One of the first companies to utilize the @Road API is NowEx.net, a national provider of same-day delivery services offering its customers Web-based, interactive shipment tracking capability. Powered by @Road LocationSmart technology, customers can log on to the NowEx.net Web site to personally track shipments in real-time while shipments are in transit.
"As specialists in the same-day delivery business, we wanted to leverage the instant, location-specific capabilities of the @Road platform to truly differentiate our service from that of our competitors; partnering with @Road enabled us to accomplish this through our Web-tracking solution," said Michael Oakes, president of NowEx.net.
"We used the @Road API to integrate the @Road mapping database and location capabilities into the NowEx.net platform so customers can visually track their shipments as the shipments are en route. Because we serve many large companies that need up-to-the-minute information on the status of their deliveries, this capability is a valuable component of the NowEx.net offering."
Another @Road API partner is Cleveland-based Tracker Management Inc., a leading developer of dispatch and management systems for the towing industry. Tracker Management recently integrated the @Road technology into its existing service offering for towing companies, providing constant monitoring of vehicle location and enhanced communication capabilities.
"We can now offer our customers a complete dispatch and management system that includes location and enhanced two-way text communication between the dispatcher and driver," said Jim Weaver, president of Tracker Management. "The @Road API provides an easy way to link our customers to value-added services."
Scott Towing of Woodbridge and Roselle, N.J., has used Tracker Management's dispatch and management software since 1991, and finds the integration of the @Road location and communication capabilities greatly improves the efficiency of both the dispatcher and drivers.
"We can preset up to 30 single-key messages, such as 'Assigned,' 'Arrived,' and 'Hooked' that record every step of a towing service call," said Scott Flowers, the owner of Scott Towing. "With constant location monitoring and one-key functional recording, there is rarely a need for audio communication. It is a real enhancement to an already-great management tool."
