Land Rover Receives 'Corporate Caring Award'
From The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals
NEW YORK, Feb. 6 The American Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has bestowed its "Corporate Caring Award" to
Land Rover North America, Inc. in recognition of the positive social impact
made by one of Land Rover's recent television commercials. The commercial,
created by Austin, Tx.-based ad agency GSD&M and entitled "Dog," depicts a
young couple driving a Land Rover Discovery Series II on their way to an
evening at the theater. Through a driving rain, the couple encounters a stray
and obviously frightened dog on the roadside and chooses to forgo the theater
-- they instead pull to the roadside, rescue the dog and get drenched by the
rain for their efforts. The commercial, part of the Land Rover "Courage"
campaign launched in May 2000, has drawn praise by animal lovers throughout
North America.
At the 2001 National Humane Awards Luncheon held at the Pierre Hotel in
New York, APSCA president Dr. Larry Hawk said, "Animal adoption is the
cornerstone of The ASPCA's efforts. With its 'Dog' commercial, Land Rover, in
a subtle but unmistakable way, placed a wonderful message in front of millions
of Americans. Helping stray animals takes wonderful courage. I thank Land
Rover -- their message clearly shows the altruistic nature of their
organization."
The Corporate Caring Award (formerly called the Corporate Citizenship
Award) is given by The ASPCA to a business or corporation that promotes humane
principles and awareness of animal welfare issues within the framework of
their business activities, or among their clients and employees. Past
recipients of this award include the Nestle Corporation and American Airlines.
2001 marks the first time an automobile manufacturer has won the prestigious
award.
In receiving the award on behalf of Land Rover North America, William E.
Baker, vice president, Corporate Communications, said, "We have been gratified
by the widespread, positive response our 'Dog' commercial has generated and we
very much appreciate the recognition given to us today by The APSCA. A few
years back, another one of our ads -- this one called 'We Brake for Fish' --
led to Land Rover's ongoing involvement with Tread Lightly!, Inc. We look
forward to working closely with The ASPCA to develop programs that lend
ongoing, long-term education about, and support for, rescued animals."
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded
in 1866 as the first animal humane organization in the Western Hemisphere.
Today, The ASPCA has over 600,000 members and donors and continues to prevent
cruelty and alleviate pain, fear and suffering of animals through nationwide
education, awareness and legislative programs. The ASPCA headquarters in New
York City houses one of the area's largest full service animal hospitals, an
adoption facility and the Humane Law Enforcement Department, which is
responsible for enforcing New York's animal cruelty laws. For more
