NHRA's most competitive professional class started the '01 NHRA Winston Drag Racing season today. The first of four scheduled qualifying session took place at Pomona Raceway for the NHRA AutoZone Winternationals.

Troy Coughlin was the first of the two identical looking yellow and black Jeg's Mail Order Oldsmobile Cutlass' to motor on to the track. Troy was in the left lane and ran a 6.907 at 198.93 mph. This first run of the season put Troy in the number 12 spot.

"We have room for improvement in my car," commented Troy. "We will spend the evening looking through all of the data that we generated from the run that we made today and use information from runs that we have made in the past to improve. I am confident that we will improve tomorrow."

Jeg was in the final pair of "factory hot rods" to blast down the track. Jeg's first run of the '01 NHRA season was a 6.886 at 199.94 mph, which put him in the number seven position after the first session.

"That was an ugly 6.88 run. The car took off and moved around through first and second gear. Once the car calmed down it felt great," said Jeg. "We will work on having a smoother launch from the starting line and a more effective transition down track. We will come out swinging tomorrow."
