Toyota Reports January Sales- Lexus Division Posts Best-Ever

TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 1 Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc., today reported January sales of 118,120 vehicles, a decrease of
11.4 percent from last year's best-ever January.
"Consumers have adopted a firm, wait-and-see attitude as confidence in the
economy continues to slip," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president.
"The new-car market is softening and the industry must adjust to buyers who
are more wary and more demanding."
Although Toyota Division sales were down 14.2 percent from last year's
best-ever January, Toyota Division light trucks enjoyed a best-ever January
with sales of 45,231 units, up 9.1 percent. Light truck sales were led by
their hot-selling SUVs. The redesigned RAV4 compact SUV enjoyed a best-ever
January, with 6,765 units sold, an impressive increase of 84.1 percent. The
Sequoia full-size SUV reported strong sales of 4,492 units. The all-new
Highlander mid-size SUV, launched mid-January, posted a strong introductory
sales month with 2,325 units sold. The restyled Tacoma compact pickup led
sales, with 11,543 units sold, an increase of 2.9 percent over last January.
The all-new Prius gas/electric hybrid vehicle continued to post strong sales
with 1,298 units sold.
The Lexus Division enjoyed a best-ever January and posted impressive sales
of 15,623 units, up 13.3 percent over the same period last year. Sales were
led by Lexus passenger cars, with 8,955 units sold, up 56.7 percent. The
completely redesigned LS 430 flagship sedan posted sales of 3,027 units, a
tremendous increase of 311.1 percent over last January. The GS 430, which
received a more powerful engine for 2001, enjoyed January sales of 406 units,
an increase of 29.7 percent. The GS 300, which also received minor restyling
for 2001, posted strong January sales of 1,438 units, up 13.5 percent from
last year. The all-new IS 300 sport sedan reported steady sales of 1,475
units.
Sales of North American-built vehicles made up 56.9 percent of total
January sales. There were 26 selling days in January compared to 25 last
year.
