GM, Isuzu, Fuji Heavy and Suzuki to Use
Unigraphics Solutions' 3D CAD System
Integration Will Allow for Mutual Development of New Models
ST. LOUIS, Jan. 31 General Motors, Isuzu Motors, Fuji
Heavy Industries, and Suzuki Motors plan to integrate their 3D computer-aided
design (CAD) systems used in the development of new models, according to wire
service reports issued earlier this week. The four manufacturing powerhouses
will all use Unigraphics from Unigraphics Solutions, Inc. and
expect that the data sharing facilitated by this integration, will enable them
to increase development efficiency and enhance competitiveness.
GM already uses Unigraphics -- UGS' high-end, integrated 3D CAD/CAM/CAE
software suite -- as its exclusive global product development system.
Additional points made in the wire service reports:
-- All four firms will switch a significant percentage of their systems to
Unigraphics by 2004.
-- Currently, both Isuzu Motors and Fuji Heavy Industries use Dassault's
CATIA Systems, while Suzuki Motor uses SCAD.
-- Fuji Heavy Industries, the maker of Subarus, plans to spend between
2 billion and 3 billion yen (17 to 25 million dollars) to switch
approximately half of its 800 CATIA licenses over to Unigraphics by
2004. Fuji Heavy will then link the other half to GM's system so that
data may be exchanged.
-- Isuzu Motors, which plans joint development of a commercial vehicle
with GM in early 2002, already has switched 30 percent of its CAD
systems to Unigraphics and is aiming for a nearly full changeover
within three years.
-- "We will turn all our CAD systems onto Unigraphics, apart from
10 percent, which will be used for some exports, such as buses, that
are very old models and cannot be changed," said Yoshiko Shibata,
spokeswoman for Isuzu.
-- The move is aimed at aiding "joint development, for commercial vehicles
and pick-ups, especially," said Shibata.
-- Suzuki Motor also uses Unigraphics in its design teams that are jointly
paired with GM.
This unprecedented collaboration among four globally dispersed leaders in
the automobile and truck manufacturing industry represents a "new economy"
shift that places the emphasis on value creation through product development.
According to a June 2000 research report from Wasserstein Perella Securities,
Inc., which analyzes the collaborative vehicle development processes in the
automobile industry, "product development performance is the most fundamental
determinant of financial returns and relative stock performance over time."
"UGS is proud to be a major participant in the sea change that is taking
place, not only in the automotive industry, but in all major manufacturing
industries," says Tony Affuso, president and CEO, Unigraphics Solutions. "We
believe that the world has only just begun to unlock the value that can be
realized through improvements to the entire product life cycle process. UGS
applauds these four manufacturing leaders for their remarkable initiative and
foresight."
