I.D. Systems Awarded Pilot Program to Manage
British Airways Ground Equipment
Driver and Vehicle Tracking System May Ultimately be Deployed On
3,000 Units of Ground Support Equipment at Heathrow and Gatwick Airports
HACKENSACK, N.J., Jan. 30 I.D. Systems, Inc.
, a leading provider of end-to-end wireless asset management
solutions, today announced that it has received a purchase order from Ryder
Ground Fleet Services to provide a pilot "Driver and Vehicle Tracking System"
for British Airways' (LISE: BAY, NYSE: BAB) fleet of ground support equipment
(GSE). The pilot system is scheduled for implementation on a test group of
vehicles at London Gatwick Airport during the first quarter of 2001, with
subsequent potential expansion to approximately 3,000 pieces of equipment at
both Gatwick and London Heathrow airports.
Ryder Ground Fleet Services, a unit of Ryder Plc, the U.K. arm of Ryder
System, Inc. , provides maintenance for British Airways' GSE fleet.
Steve Mulley, Engineering Manager of Ryder Ground Fleet Services, said, "On
behalf of British Airways, we sought a comprehensive fleet management system
that could, among other things, provide vehicle access control, report on
vehicle utilization, generate key maintenance data, monitor accidents, and
help ensure the safe operation of the vehicles. After reviewing a number of
proposals, we awarded I.D. Systems this pilot program based on the extensive
capabilities of their Wireless Fleet Management System. The system addresses
major safety and cost issues associated with ground support equipment, and we
are very excited about the pilot, as we envision I.D. Systems' technology as a
potential future standard for managing GSE."
Jeffrey Jagid, Chief Executive Officer of I.D. Systems, stated, "We are
very pleased that Ryder Ground Fleet Services will be piloting our Wireless
Fleet Management System for British Airways. Every major airline at every
major airport in the world utilizes a fleet of baggage tugs, belt loaders,
aircraft tow tractors, deicing trucks, and other types of equipment. The
British Airways program puts I.D. Systems in a strong position to capitalize
on other opportunities in this large market for GSE management."
"Managing GSE fleets with our system can generate both significant cost
savings and substantial operational improvements for airlines," continued Mr.
Jagid. "In addition to reducing vehicle-related damage and maintenance costs,
our technology can improve the speed and efficiency of aircraft service by,
for example, controlling the dispatching, allocation, and handling of
equipment in airport gate areas."
