JON NELSON JOINS REF MOTORSPORTS AT PIR AND EL CAJON
January 29, 2001 (Palmdale, Calif.) - Bob Farmer, owner of REF Motorsports, today announced that Jon Nelson will pilot the No. 4 Ultra Wheels, Stick Only Transmissions, Maropulos Racing Engines, Speedway Engineering Pontiac in the Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring season opener February 4th at Phoenix International Raceway and the March 24th Cajon Speedway 125.
Nelson won two of the seven events he entered during the 2000 Southwest Series season at Cajon Speedway and Rocky Mountain Raceway. Before his involvement in NASCAR racing, Nelson worked in offroad racing for General Motors for ten years where he acquired extensive chassis and mechanical experience. His team earned the SCORE championship for General Motors in six of those ten years. Nelson's driving experience prior to the Southwest Series was in Legends cars and Spec Trucks.
Ultra Wheels will be featured on the REF cars for the PIR and Cajon events. Farmer is still searching for additional sponsorship to run the full season. He is looking forward to having Nelson run with the team for the first two events, and hopes to continue for a full season deal.
"We're excited that Jon has agreed to drive for us," Farmer commented. "He's shown that he's a winner, with two wins under his belt in a limited schedule of races in the 2000 season. This will be his first time running at PIR. We expect to be good this weekend, but we're also looking forward to El Cajon where he took one of his wins last year."
Nelson said, 'I'm so excited to drive for REF Motorsports. They are just the greatest people. Their equipment is good, and, with some of the stuff I can bring to the table in setups and the driving end, we'll do real well. I'm looking forward to it."
