U.S. F2000 FINIISHES WINTER TEST

FAIRFIELD, N.J. (January 27, 2001) —The U.S. F2000 National Championship Presented by Speedvision finished its first annual two-day winter test at Homestead-Miami Speedway under ideal conditions.

Under clear sunny skies, the final day of testing was run on the 1.4-mile modified oval. U.S. F2000 will contest two rounds on the oval April 7 and 8 in support of the Indy Racing Northern Light Series. Running on the new Avon tires, which have won every Formula Continental National event in SCCA Club racing thus far in 2001, the entire test was held without any major incidents.

After setting the time to beat on the road course during the first day of the test, Memo Rojas Jr. posted the quickest time in the morning session on the oval. Rojas Jr., of Mexico City, Mexico, posted a time of 0.44.213 (113.99 mph). Second quickest in the morning session was Jason LaPoint with a time of 0:44.361 (113.61 mph). Completing the top-three was Scotsman Peter Gray, who posted a time of 0:44.563 (113.09 mph). Eight of the fifteen drivers all posted times in the 44 second range.

In the afternoon session the majority of the field used the experiences gained in the morning to improve on their times. Fastest in the afternoon session was Alexander Figge, who posted a quick time of 0:44.242 (113.91 mph). Rojas Jr. was second quickest, though unable to improve his time, posting a quick time of 0:44.247 (13.90). Completing the top-three was LaPoint with a time of 0:44.285 (113.80 mph). The top-11 cars all posted times in the 44 second range.

“The car worked great this afternoon,” said Figge, who captured three wins in the STAR Mazda Series last year. “The team has really made me feel comfortable, and I’m pleased I was able to perform so well. I’m really impressed with how the series operates and am really looking forward to the upcoming year.”

The U.S. F2000 National Championship returns to Miami March 3 for the season-opener, part of the Grand-Am Nextel 250.
