MARTINO LOOKS FOR A PRODUCTIVE SUPERBOWL WEEKEND Century 21 Racing Team heads to Houston for Pontiac Excitement Pro Stock Superbowl

Parsippany, N.J., January 26, 2001 - This weekend, while much of the country focuses on a certain athletic competition in Florida, some of the nation's most competitive drag racers will gather in Texas for a traditional event of their own. Each year, as a final tune-up prior to the NHRA season-opener in Pomona, the "factory hot rods" head to Houston Raceway Park for the Pontiac Excitement Pro Stock Superbowl. In the last two years, CENTURY 21 Grand Am pilot Tom Martino has been one of the favorites, as he followed up his 1999 runner-up performance with an impressive victory a year ago. However, following an off-season that saw his team switch from their traditional Firebird to the all-new Grand Am, Martino is taking a more pragmatic approach, focusing less on defending his title and more on preparing for the season ahead.

"We're concentrating on getting our new Century 21 Grand Am ready for Pomona," explained Martino. "We'll take advantage of every opportunity we can to run this new car, because we're still getting familiar with it. Unfortunately, the weather at this event the last two years has not been very conducive to testing. The conditions were unlike any other we'd see in the course of a season, between rain and severe cold, so the information had little bearing. Therefore, we'll use our runs in Houston as more of a final check of all the systems on the car, making sure everything works the way its supposed to. Of course, we're not against winning again, especially since this is a Pontiac event."

In addition to the mechanical refinements, the human element of the Century 21 race team will also benefit from this weekend's contest. As the first time in several months that the Martino crew will be working under race conditions, they will be able to develop the routine necessary to prepare their Grand Am for competition in the time allowed. In addition, as the driver, Tom Martino will be able to work on his personal tune-up behind the wheel.

"The real advantage is that this is the only time we get to let the clutch out next to other cars before we go racing for real," said Martino. "It's similar to what other sports call getting your game face on. Every time I go down the track, I work on my driving, but there is nothing like having that guy in the other lane to compete against. It definitely gets you ready."
