Exclusive: GM Loses $A1million As It Temporarily Closes Assembly Plant - just-auto.com Reports

    LONDON, Jan. 26 http://www.just-auto.com -- Holden, the
Australian arm of GM, halted production at its only vehicle assembly facility
in Adelaide, South Australia on Wednesday.
The report at http://just-auto.com/news_detail.asp?art=22942 says that the
nine hour stoppage was to correct quality problems at the plant.
Workers at the plant, which lost around $A1million ($US543,000) because of
the halted production, did not lose any pay. Instead, they worked alongside
managers to come up with ideas to improve build quality of the cars built at
the plant -- the 304 Commodore and Statesman models.
When production commenced on Thursday morning, Holden's public affairs
director John Morrison said: "The management took a decision to halt
production to discuss quality issues with assembly line area managers."
He continued, "Stopping the production lines was a bold thing to do, but
it reflects a change of culture that we are not going to hide poor quality --
we are going to bring problems into the open and get them fixed. Most of the
faults were likely to have gone unnoticed by customers, but we set high
quality standards and are determined to meet them."
