With all the talk about bloated government and fat cats feeding at the public trough,it’s a pleasure for me to spotlight a group of public servants who play a life saving role here in the U.S. This month there are more than 3 million vehicles with safety problems listed in the NHTSA recalls notice, each has a direct life or death affect on millions of vehicle owners, their families, friends, co-workers and the occasional hitchhiker.
NHTSA publicizes recalls to alert consumers to safety problems and encourage owners to take action. Under federal law, safety problems must be remedied without cost to consumers. Currently, (editors emphasis: ONLY!) 72 percent of the owners of vehicles with safety problems have the recall work performed.
The NHTSA says manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards is found. We ask are there systems in place that reach out to the owner of the recalled vehicle, again and again until the work has been completed? Although the majority of owners of cars affected by recalls will be tracked down by their dealers, we believe that the more publicity surrounding each recall the better, and to that end TACH publishes each recall.
The Auto Channels editorial board thinks that, for all of our good, the recall scorecard should be 100%.
