Design Transportation Implements Profit Tools TL/LTL Software

    FORT WORTH, Texas--Jan. 24, 2001--Design Transportation Services Inc. has implemented trucking software from Profit Tools, Inc. of Newmarket, NH, for their truckload, less than truckload, and brokerage businesses. Operating from two terminals in Texas and one in North Carolina, Design offers dry van TL and LTL services with 85 road tractors, 120 trailers, and 8 local delivery trucks. Overflow business is brokered to third-party carriers out of their Fort Worth office.
    Company owner and president Charles D. Hill began with one truck, one driver, and one customer in 1989. "Since then, we've grown to 95 trucks, $13MM in revenue, and several Fortune 500 clients--but we still have the first customer we started with" Hill says. "As we grew, our business was getting harder to control, and we began looking for a good operations software package," Hill recalls. "Profit Tools had the best solution for us. It allowed us to eliminate a lot of costly billing errors, and to accurately track shipments, drivers and equipment. With it, we've been able to optimize company resources."
    Design uses Profit Tools for operations functions including order entry, dispatch, billing, brokerage, and driver logs. An interface to Qualcomm satellite communications keeps dispatchers connected with drivers and enables them to locate vehicles and generate ETAs on demand. Drivers can request directions from the field without tying up dispatchers. Accounting is handled by QuickBooks Pro via an interface to Profit Tools.
    Sharon C. Siar, Design's vice president, said that implementing Profit Tools was easier than expected. "We have 17 office employees, but getting them all trained was not difficult. The system is quite easy to use. Profit Tools responded to our specific needs and got us running very quickly. Their technical support is excellent," Siar says.
