TRW Donates $75,000 to Support Livingston County M-TEC Center
Business Editors/Automotive WritersLIVONIA, Mich.--Jan. 23, 2001--Mott Community College's technical education center in Livingston County has earned the support of one of the world's premier automotive and aerospace suppliers, TRW. TRW has donated the first installment of a $75,000 grant to the Howell-based Livingston County Michigan Technical Education Center (M-TEC).
The first $25,000 check was presented to Lennetta Coney, president of the Mott Community College M-TEC Foundation at the January 22 meeting of the MCC Board of Trustees. A check for $25,000 will also be presented in the two following years on behalf of the TRW Foundation.
"This is an important step forward," stated Coney. "The Livingston County M-TEC was designed to be directed and supported by the business community that would use its services. When a business of the international quality of TRW takes a leading role, it shows the importance of this project."
The Livingston County M-TEC center is part of an initiative to build a network of Technical Education Centers across Michigan. Mott Community College joins eight other community colleges in directing the initiative, which was announced by Governor John Engler at the TRW Chassis Systems plant in Fowlerville in 1995. TRW Chassis Systems also operates Livingston County manufacturing facilities in Brighton and Fenton, Mich.
Currently under construction, MCC's Livingston County M-TEC will be a 34,792 square foot, high bay industrial building, located in the Trans-West Industrial Park in Howell. Its position at the junction of M-59 and I-96 with proximity to air and rail transportation, in the fastest-growing county in Michigan, indicates the key role this facility can play in the economic development of central Michigan.
"This is a significant opportunity for TRW Chassis Systems to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to Livingston County," said John Plant, executive vice president, TRW Chassis Systems. "As one of the largest employers in the county, we want to continue to contribute to the significant growth of the area, and to help ensure that the youth here have access to superior technical education and training programs."
TRW Chassis Systems is a world leader in braking, steering and suspension systems, commercial steering, engine components and aftermarket replacement parts for the global automotive industry. TRW Inc. provides advanced technology products and services to the automotive, aerospace and information technology markets. The company's 1999 sales were $17 billion (USD). TRW news is available on two Internet sites at www.trw.com and www.businesswire.com/trw/.
Mott Community College is also building its Regional Technology Center in Flint, which has also been designated as a state M-TEC in addition to the M-TEC in Livingston County. Information about MCC is available at www.mcc.edu.
