GM Gets Bearings With SKF

GOTEBORG, Sweden--SKF has been selected by General Motors to supply wheel bearings for its new segment C platform, the replacement for the current Opel Astra, that will start production in Europe in model year 2005.

This is the second such award by General Motors to SKF in recent months. It also will provide the rear wheel application of GM’s segment D platform--the replacement for the current Opel Vectra--that will start production next year. This new award represents a sales volume of nearly (Euro) $50 million per year and will cover Europe, where SKF will have the major share on this platform, and all of the demand for Latin America.

“The selection of SKF and our solution is very important for us and we are proud of General Motors’ recognition of, and continued confidence in, SKF’s capabilities,” said Tom Johnstone, president of SKF’s Automotive Division. The bearing solution is a compact hub unit/third-generation with an integrated active sensor.
