In-Car Cameras Developed
HOLLAND, Mich.--Donnellys focus on in-car cameras has been fully developed as the companys VideoMirror Camera Vision System utilizes the latest image-processing and display technology to give drivers better views of their vehicles interiors and exteriors.
BabyVue uses a small camera mounted in the vehicles headliner to allow drivers a view of reverse-facing infants. Once the child reaches the appropriate age and weight to face forward in the back seat, the camera can be turned to provide the driver with a view of the vehicles other inside activities--a feature known as CabinVue.
ReversAid is an exterior camera vision system, and this uses a discreet camera mounted on the rear of the vehicle. Once the car is put into reverse, the driver is provided an enhanced view of what is behind the vehicle. Depending on the angle of the camera, ReversAid can be modified to become TowChek. This vision supplement product assists drivers backing up to a hitch without the assistance of a second person.
These are the products that truly address for the first time, problems that drivers experience everyday, said Frank OBrien, vice president for corporate marketing and consumer products. ReversAid reduces rear blind spots, particularly in larger vehicles such as mini-vans and SUVs. BabyVue reduces the need for drivers to turn away from the road in order to view babies in their reverse-facing seats, he noted, pointing out that at a glance, drivers can now access a wider view both inside and behind their vehicles.
Each of the products uses a small flip-down hideaway screen that is mounted on the rearview mirror. The screen displays images captured by low profile, discreet cameras mounted in the headliner--or in the rear of the exterior--depending on which product is used.
OBrien said the company has utilized the latest in CMOS technology for its camera systems. This provides a clearer, sharper image and more functionality than the traditional CCD cameras used for home camera vision systems, he said.
Donnelly has also developed a smaller screen for viewing that does not compromise the quality of the image being displayed, or compromise the interior of the automobile, according to OBrien. The technology uses a fraction of the power of more traditional systems, and the small screen allows optimum positioning of the display. This prevents drivers from having to look away from the road for extended periods of time in order to determine the activity inside or outside of the vehicle.
While consumers can install the VideoMirror Camera Vision System products themselves, professional installation is recommended. The mounting kit includes all of the components necessary for installation, including Donnellys SPM auto-dimming mirror at no extra charge. The in-cabin and exterior camera products are available for purchase on-line via the companys Internet site at www.donnelly.com.
This system really underscores our commitment to making driving easier for drivers, passengers and everyone on the road, OBrien opined. Its advanced thinking with a human touch.
Donnelly has been actively developing a wide range of car camera systems for nearly ten years. Its Panoramic Vision System, which replaces rear view mirrors, was displayed on the GM Precept at the 2000 North American International Show. Donnelly also is the creator of SmartRelease, a trunk release system that uses intelligent technology to automatically free even the smallest children.
In addition to 14 U.S. facilities, Donnelly operates from international subsidiaries in Mexico, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden and China, plus joint ventures in the U.S., Brazil, China and Malaysia.
