BW Gets GM 4-Wheel Drive Deal

CHICAGO--General Motors has selected BorgWarner Inc. to supply four-wheel drive transfer case systems for several GM sport-utility and light-truck platforms. This is the second such award by GM to BorgWarner in recent months.

All programs are on a “fast to market” schedule and are expected to increase BorgWarner’s current transfer case sales by nearly $200 million per year.

“The selection of BorgWarner is strategically important to our organization,” said Timothy M. Manganello, president and general manager of BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems, which has design and manufacturing responsibility for the program.

“This GM business represents a significant addition to our customer base and is the first new GM four-wheel drive business since 1987,” he added. “We are very proud of General Motors’ recognition of and renewed confidence in BorgWarner’s capabilities. As we re-establish ourselves at GM, we hope there will be opportunities to introduce some of our new all-wheel drive technologies for passenger car platforms as well.”

BorgWarner TorqTransfer Systems, a BorgWarner operating group, is the largest independent global designer and producer of transfer cases and torque distribution management systems for four-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles for the sport-utility and light truck markets. Other major customers include DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Co., Honda, Isuzu Motors, Hyundai and Ssangyong.

The company operates 60 manufacturing and technical facilities in 13 countries.
