Canadian Tire Goes With Federal-Mogul

TORONTO--Canadian Tire, Canada’s largest automotive retailer, has awarded Federal-Mogul Corp. its friction, rotor and drum brake business.

Federal-Mogul’s friction products will be sold under Canadian Tire’s private-label--Certified Friction--at its retail locations and as Wagner branded products at its Parts Source stores. The drums and rotors will be sold under Federal-Mogul’s Wagner brand at both locations. Canadian Tire currently has 44 percent of the “Do it Yourself” market in Canada.

“We are pleased to be able to provide Canadian Tire with our high quality friction, drum and rotor products,” said Bob Egan, Federal-Mogul’s vice president of aftermarket sales for the Americas. “It’s been said that 85 percent of all Canadians live within 15 miles of a Canadian Tire store,” he added. “Through this agreement, we can help Canadian Tire ensure that all of its customers have access to reliable, quality brake products that will result in improved customer loyalty and brand awareness.”

In 1934 Canadian Tire, which sells a wide variety of merchandise catagories outside of automotive goods, opened its first official associate store in Hamilton, Ontario. Now there are more than 390 associate dealers running 430 stores throughout Canada. It sends out 9 million annual catalogues (in both French and English) and has a reputation for aggressive sales and publicity campaigns. In 1937 Canadian Tire was the first retail store to equip its sales staff with roller skates to speed-up service.
