UAW Legislative Conference Will Feature Political Action
Workshops, Congressional Visits, Legislative Leaders and Live Radio

DETROIT, Feb. 1 UAW President Stephen P. Yokich will kick
off the UAW's legislative conference on Sunday, February 4 at 7 p.m.. Also
addressing the 1,500 local union delegates from the UAW's Community Action
Program (CAP) at the opening session will be Senator Edward Kennedy. The
conference, which lasts from Sunday evening through Wednesday morning, is
being held at the Marriott Wardman Hotel in Washington, D.C.
On Monday, the delegates will attend workshop sessions on: Worksite
Issues; Work and Family; Human Rights and Government and the Market and Us.
Tuesday's plenary session will feature a media panel that will include Howard
Fineman, Chief political columnist for Newsweek and news analyst for NBC,
Karen Tumulty, political correspondent for Time Magazine and E.J. Dionne of
the Washington Post. Senator Debbie Stabenow will speak on Tuesday morning,
as will Representatives Robert Menendez, Democrat, New Jersey; Bennie
Thompson, Democrat, Mississippi; Cynthia McKinney, Democrat, Georgia; and
David Bonior, Democrat, Michigan. AFL-CIO Political Director Steve Rosenthal
will also address the Tuesday morning session.
On Tuesday afternoon, delegates will fan out at the Capitol to the
congressional offices of their respective districts to discuss the UAW's
legislative priorities.
The conference will conclude on Wednesday morning with remarks from
Congressional Minority Leader Dick Gephardt; AFL-CIO president John Sweeny;
Senators Paul Wellstone and Jean Carnahan and Representatives Denny Davis,
Democrat, Illinois; Hilda Solis, Democrat, California; Jack Quinn, Republican,
New York; and Lacy Clay, Democrat, Missouri. UAW Secretary-Treasurer Ruben
Burks will deliver concluding remarks prior to the 12-noon adjournment.
Also featured will be live broadcasts from the conference by ieamerica
talk show hosts Peter Werbe and Mike Malloy.
Plenary sessions of the conference are open to the media. A camera
