Mazda Sales Zoom Zoom Ahead in January

    IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 1 One month ago, Mazda North American
Operations kicked off the New Year by announcing record sales for the month of
December.  Despite projections for an industry-wide sales downturn, Mazda
today announced an increase of 33.4 percent for the month of January.  This is
Mazda's best January sales increase since 1995.
    Overall, Mazda's month-to-date sales for January are 18,323, and the
year-to-date sales total is 18,323 units.
    Mazda's recently introduced Tribute sport utility vehicle led the
company's sales increase, with the revised Millenia and Miata also turning in
strong performances.  Millenia reported a sales increase of 35.9 percent over
the same period last year, making this the best January for Millenia since
1995.  Miata sales were up 17.7 percent over last January, making this Miata's
best January since 1994.
    Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and
marketing, customer parts and services support of Mazda vehicles in the United
States.  Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships
nationwide.
