INDY LIGHTS: Dorricott Racing's Faulkner Honored in Ireland

DAMIEN FAULKNER NAMED IRELAND'S TOP DRIVER IN 2000 SUNNYVALE, Calif. (Dec. 4, 2000) - Dorricott Racing's Damien Faulkner, of Ireland, has been named Ireland's 2000 International Motorsports Competitor of the Year. Faulkner was conferred the award at the first annual Alfa Romeo Awards for Excellence in Irish Motorsport, Dec. 1, at the Westbury Hotel in Dublin. The award was decided by a panel of motorsport journalists and presented by the Irish motorsports governing body "Motorsport Ireland." The prestigious award, which had previously been won by Formula One star Eddie Irvine on two occasions, was accepted by Faulkner's father, Francis. Faulkner was unable to attend the awards banquet due to present testing commitments with Dorricott Racing. Faulkner's gratitude was shared with the panel of journalists, aligned sponsors and supporters, Alex Sinclair, and Motorsport Ireland by Francis Faulkner. Recognition of his achievements by the Irish motorsport journalists and Motorsport Ireland comes on top of two other awards previously bestowed in his native county of Donegal. He has also received a "Donegal Person of the Year" award and a county specific award for outstanding achievement in a chosen sport. Faulkner became the Republic of Ireland's first European motor racing champion in 19 years by capturing the 2000 European Formula Palmer Audi Championship. The 24 year-old, who hails from the town of Moville, was a dominant figure during the EFPA's 20-race season behind six wins and seven pole positions. He earned 12 podium finishes in all and claimed five track lap records. He also became the first driver in EFPA history to win two poles in a single weekend, and was the only driver take a double victory at a single circuit (Oulton Park, August 2000).
