Friday, October 6, 2000 BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The 9th annual NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California got underway Friday at famed Famoso Raceway. Under clear blue skies the large crowd got to witness the first attempts at time trials as many competitors got to grips with the racetrack. Quickest time of the day came from Auburn, Calif.'s Jim Paul who drove his A/Fuel Dragster to a 6.745-second, 202.33-mph lap. The crowd-pleasing Top Fuel Dragsters, more than 20 are gathered in the Famoso Raceway pits, make their first qualifying runs Saturday. The Hot Rod Reunion is a combination of drag-racing action on the track, street rod in the pits and the parking lot, and a celebration of drag racing's rich history. On hand Saturday to be recognized as Hot Rod Reunion Honorees will be Nick Arias Jr., Robert "Bones" Balogh, Dave and Tim Beebe, Cloy Fitzgerald, and Bob Noice. Motorsports legend Danny Ongais is the event's grand marshall. Time trials begin at 11 a.m. Saturday with Top Fuel qualifying slated for 12 noon and 3 p.m. Just after 5 p.m. fans will be treated to a program called "cackle fest," in which eight Top Fuel Dragsters from the 1960s will be push-started down the Famoso Raceway track in a re-creation of how the "Kings of the sport" were brought to the race track almost 40 years ago.
