NHRA FMDRS: Henkelman, August Jr. crush Southern Oregon Dragway Records

23 September 2000

MEDFORD, Ore.- Over 300 racecars and motorcycles from the NHRA Northwest
Division took over the newly renovated Southern Oregon Dragway for the
finale the NHRA Northwest Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. In
Friday's qualifying, Brandon Henkelman of San Jose, Calif. and Ron August
Jr. of Pleasanton, Calif. annihilated the track records in Federal-Mogul
Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car, respectively.

In Federal-Mogul Dragster qualifying, six of the nine cars that qualified
on Friday were quick enough to break the track e.t. and speed record of
5.95 seconds at 247 mph set in a '98 by John Shoemaker of Sacramento,
Calif. Henkelman gets the honor of being the quickest Federal-Mogul
Dragster to complete the Medford, Ore. quarter-mile with a pass of 5.592
seconds at 248.46 mph. Mark Hentges of Federal Way, Wash. put his claim on
the track speed record with a pass of 5.775 seconds at 251.50 mph, which
was good enough for the No. 4 qualifying position. Oregon residents, Steve
Federlin of Oregon City, Ore. qualified No. 3 and Gregg Lawrence of Salem,
Ore. qualified No. 5.

"I am beginning to like Oregon a lot, " said Henkelman. "I won my first
Federal-Mogul Dragster race in Woodburn [Ore.] earlier this year and now we
blow away the track record in Medford. If the track stays as good as it
was today we will come out shooting for another track record tomorrow"
Ron August Jr. drove his '00 Chevrolet Camaro Federal-Mogul Funny Car to
the No. 1 qualifying position and the track speed record with a run of
5.967 seconds at 242.34 mph. Brian Hough of Eugene, Ore. set the
Federal-Mogul Funny Car track e.t. record in '99 with a pass of 5.95
seconds at 239 mph. Three local drivers made an impressive showing on the
first day of qualifying, John Hyland of Springfield, Ore. qualified No. 2,
Lloyd Bandle of Jacksonville, Ore. qualified No. 3, and Clint Thompson of
Klamath Falls, Ore. qualified No. 6.

Qualifying and time trials will continue at Southern Oregon Dragway
