NHRA: Team Kendall shows its support for Dave Schultz
3 September 2000
During Friday's qualifying sessions for the U.S. Nationals, the various racecars sponsored by Kendall Motor Oil will be carrying a new decal. However, instead of promoting a new product, the new signage will be a show of support for Sunoco/Kendall Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Dave Schultz, who recently revealed that he was fighting colon cancer. Schultz, who is a six-time Winston champion, had surgery a week ago in Indianapolis, and will start chemotherapy treatment in the next few weeks. At this weekend's event, John Smith will take over the riding duties of Schultz' Suzuki Hayabusa. The decal, which will be in various locations on the Team Kendall entries, simply reads "Hurry Back Dave!" In addition to Schultz' bike, the competitors who will carry the decal on Friday will include Whit Bazemore in the Kendall/Matco Camaro Nitro Funny Car, Tom Hammonds in the Winnebago/Kendall Pro Stock Camaro, Frank Manzo in the Kendall/Superwinch Avenger Federal Mogul Funny Car and Vern Moats in Kendall Firebird Federal Mogul Funny Car. The decals will be made available to the remainder of the Pro Stock Motorcycle contingent on Saturday in time for the Holley Dominator Duel (from which Schultz was forced to withdraw), and will be offered to all competitors during Monday's final eliminations. "Dave Schultz is foremost in the thoughts and prayers of everyone at Kendall Oil and Sunoco," stated Ed Dawson, Motorsports Manager for Kendall Motor Oil. "Our best wishes go out to him and we support him in all his decisions. Rest assured that we will be closely monitoring his progress, and keeping everyone informed on the status of his recovery. We look forward to seeing him back out on the track, but our only concern at this time is that Dave makes a full and speedy recovery."
