CART: Paul Tracy Wins Motorola 220 at Road America

21 August 2000

Paul Tracy won the Motorola 220 today at the 4.048-mile Road America
circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wis., round 14 of the 20-race CART FedEx
Championship Series. Tony Kanaan was the highest finisher for Mercedes-Benz,
bringing his Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Champ Car across the finish line in
eighth place.

Kanaan, who was running strong in sixth place when he came in for his
final pit stop on lap 41, lost two positions when his race car developed an
intermittent misfire during acceleration.

"The brakes were terrible at the end of the race," said Kanaan, who
started 17th, but worked his way into the top 10 early in the race. "I was
pumping the pedal in every turn."

A problem in the gearbox ended Mark Blundell's race on lap 48 of the
55-lap event, which was disappointing since the Motorola/PacWest
Racing/Mercedes driver had kept his race car in the top 10 for most of the
contest. He finished 11th.

"The gearbox had drive except when I would downshift, then it would have
no drive," said Blundell, who managed to move up through the field from his
20th position on the grid. "It was a liability for us to be out there. It's
too bad, because my crew did a great job on our pit stops."

Mauricio Gugelmin, who started his Nextel/PacWest Racing/Mercedes 10th,
was forced to park his Champ Car with a loss of power on lap 20. He was
listed in 17th position in the final standings. Only one lap before, Michel
Jourdain Jr. abandoned the competition with a fuel pressure problem in his
Herdez/Bettenhausen Motorsports/Mercedes. His final position was 18th. Luiz
Garcia Jr. experienced mechanical problems with his Hollywood/Arciero Project
Racing/Mercedes on lap two, leaving him 25th for the day.
