CART: Tony Kanaan Post Race Notes and Quotes, Chicago

31 July 2000

Tony Kanaan’s bid for his fourth career podium finish and the first for
first-year Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing ended on Lap 146 of today’s 225-lap
Target Grand Prix of Chicago with a gearbox failure. Kanaan and his #55
Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Mercedes-Benz Reynard were running third at the
time, the same position for which he qualified on Saturday. Kanaan
reported losing fifth gear on Lap 142, and by Lap 146, the entire
gearbox went away and he coasted to a stop on the front straightaway of
the 1-mile Chicago Motor Speedway oval.

The CART FedEx Championship Series takes next weekend off before
resuming with back-to-back events at Mid-Ohio (Aug. 13) and Road America
(Aug. 20), Rounds 13 and 14 of the year. The team will test later this
week – Thursday and Friday – at Sebring, Fla.

TONY KANAAN

“It was great while it lasted. We lost fifth gear a few laps before,
and then I lost them all. It’s really unfortunate because we were
running really well. The guys were working hard. We had two great pit
stops. It was looking like it was going to be a great day. I’m really
upset. Luck just isn’t on our side right now. But we’ll turn that
around. I’m sure of it. That’s the way it goes in racing. We showed
up this weekend, that’s for sure. We showed people that we can do it.
All we need is a little luck.”
