NHRA FMDRS: Bozzelli, Manzo on top at Numidia
30 July 2000
NUMIDIA, Pa.- Cliff Bozzelli grabbed the number one spot in Federal-Mogul Dragster with a pass of 5.720 seconds at 248.00 mph, knocking Jeanie Booz of Blomming Glen, Pa. to the number two position. Booz went down swinging as she set the track mph record with a lap of 250.69 mph, in 5.743 seconds. Bozzelli held the old record of 244.89 mph set in July of '98. "It was a good pass" commented the New Jersey resident Bozzelli. "We've had a lot of problems and have hurt a lot of parts this year. It just feels good to make two nice passes back to back." Bozzelli won earlier this year at U.S 13 Dragway in Delmar, Del., with a borrowed motor from fellow dragster racer Ken Winward. In Federal-Mogul Funny Car, it was Frank Manzo taking the top spot. Manzo is unbeaten in the NHRA Northeast Division this year with wins in Reading, Pa., Delmar, Del., and West Lebanon, N.Y. earlier this month. Manzo recorded a lap of 5.825 seconds at 251.81 mph and is followed by Paul Gill with a 5.886, 244.16 in the number two position. "The 82 (5.82 seconds) won't hold up. (Bob) Newberry's gonna take my money", said Manzo as he watched Newberry stage his car for his final qualifying pass. Manzo simply smiled as Newberry tripped the clocks at 5.987 seconds at 242.98 mph, good enough for the number four qualifying spot. The two are scheduled to face each other in round two of eliminations. Sunbury, Pa., resident Joe Scott, held on to the number one qualifying position in Super Stock with a pass of 10.668 seconds, 1.082 seconds under the index. Scott will join Bozzelli and Manzo, along with Jeff Taylor in Comp. Eliminator and Dennis Chapman in Stock, in sharing the $2500 Winston Top Qualifier Award money. Eliminations begin tomorrow at Numidia Raceway with first round of Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars at noon. Gates open at 8 a.m. with racing scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The following are round one pairings and final qualifying results from Numidia Raceway, the fourth round of six in the NHRA Northeast Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series.
