A WEEKEND IN THE LIFE ...

26 July 2000

A WEEKEND IN THE LIFE OF "THE VOICE" OF IRWINDALE SPEEDWAY

It's a busy week for Irwindale Speedway's announcer Bruce Flanders. He
will be at his normal post (ten stories up) on Saturday night at L.A.'s
Half-Mile Superspeedway calling the NASCAR Southwest Series racing action, but
that won't be his only racing dates of the week in the Southland.

Thursday night at the National Orange Show stadium in San Bernardino Bruce will
preside over a revival of Speedway Motorcycle racing. "The Orange
Show was a hotbed for the Speedway bikes in the seventies and eighties,"
Flanders recalled. It was THE Wednesday night stop on a five night a week tour
that ran in southern California and drew all the top racing names. "Bruce Penhall,
Jim 'The Animal' Fishback, and the Bast brothers, with excellent racing talent
like that on the track, the announcer's job was flat out easy!" said Bruce.

Saturday, Bruce will be calling the action for the NASCAR Home Depot
Southwest Series at Southern California's newest racing venue Irwindale
Speedway. Says Flanders, "It's absolutely the nicest and cleanest racing
facility I've ever been involved with and the racing has been unbelievable!"

Sunday morning Flanders will probably shout, "I'm going to Disneyland!"
Which he will be doing quite early in the morning. It's a 2:45 AM call, for
a 6 AM announcing stint at the Magic Kingdom.

Chevron, the sponsors of the Autopia, are taking the cars off the normal
Autopia track and staging a "ralley" on the usually busy walkways at
Disneyland. The event starts at 6 AM and is over before the gates open
for regular business. The participants will be lucky contest winners and
radio personalities.

Bruce Flanders has announced for Formula One, NASCAR Winston Cup,
CART Champ Cars and dozens more racing organizations across the country,
but will be working at The Magic Kingdom for the first time. "I can guarantee
you that we will have some fun, you just can't go to Disneyland without getting
caught up in the good times." he concluded.

Next time that you're at the Speedway, turn around and give Bruce a big
wave up there in the booth … He's an original and one of best in the business.
… And, he's going to Disneyland!
